Depress the brake pedal several times with the engine off and make sure there's no change in the pedal reserve distance, then start the engine. If the pedal goes down slightly, operation is normal. Start the engine and turn it off after one or two minutes, then depress the pedal slowly three to four times. If the pedal depresses less each time, the booster is airtight. Depress the pedal while the engine is running, then stop the engine with the pedal depressed. If there's no change in the pedal reserve travel after holding the pedal for 30 seconds, the booster is airtight. With the engine off, press the brake pedal several times to remove any stored vacuum in the power brake booster, disconnect the cable(s) from the negative battery terminal(s), remove the brake master cylinder, on 2007 and later G35 Sedan models and 2008 G35 Coupe models, remove the cowl cover, carefully disconnect the vacuum hose(s) from the brake booster, remove the lock pin and clevis pin that attach the booster pushrod clevis to the brake pedal and disconnect them, remove the booster mounting fasteners, angle the booster up from the firewall until the studs and pushrod clear the holes and remove it from the engine compartment, replace the gasket that goes between the power booster and the firewall, set the pushrod length at the clevis, using a hand-held vacuum pump, apply 20 in-Hg of vacuum to the booster and measure the distance from the end of the pushrod to the surface of the booster, compare your measurement to the one in the specifications and adjust the pushrod length if necessary, tighten the booster mounting nuts to the torque in the specifications, install the booster pushrod clevis to the brake pedal, replace the clevis pin and lock pin if they show any sign of wear, apply multi-purpose grease to the pivoting areas of the assembly, adjust the brake pedal height, bleed the brake system and test the operation of the brakes before putting the vehicle into normal service.
