The turbocharger, installed on the left exhaust manifold, is designed to compress the intake air flowing from the air cleaner. It uses two turbines. One turbine, situated in the exhaust gas flow, is turned by the gases leaving the exhaust manifold. This turbine then turns the other one, which compresses the intake air and sends it into the intake manifold. To prevent the supercharging pressure from becoming excessive, the system is equipped with an exhaust gas bypass valve, which opens at a predetermined pressure to allow exhaust gases to bypass the turbocharger and go straight into the exhaust pipe. An emergency relief valve is also incorporated into the intake collector to relieve excessive pressure at that point. The turbocharger emergency relief valve is attached to the intake collector. Due to the failure of turbine bearings caused by exposure to extreme heat, water jackets were added in 1985 to the turbocharger and connected to the engine cooling system.

The primary threat to the turbocharger is dirt and foreign objects. Even a small foreign object, like a nut, metal chip, or rock, passing through the turbine rotating at 120,000 rpm can cause significant damage. To defend against this, it's essential to clean the engine and turbocharger unit before working on it, cover all inlets and pipes, and meticulously account for every nut, bolt, screw, and washer before starting the engine after assembly is complete.
