The sensor used in this system is a thermistor, an electronic component that changes its electrical resistance as the temperature changes. The engine management electronic control unit (ECU) supplies the sensor with a set voltage and measures the current flowing in the sensor circuit to determine the engine's temperature. This information, along with other inputs, is used to control the engine management system. If the sensor circuit fails, the ECU's backup facility will override the sensor signal, allowing the engine management system to run at reduced efficiency. A warning light will come on, and a fault code will be stored. The sensor can only be tested using special diagnostic equipment to avoid damaging the ECU. To remove the sensor, disconnect the battery negative terminal and partially drain the cooling system. Disconnect the wiring connector and unscrew or remove the sensor from the coolant housing. Check the sealing ring and replace if necessary. Refitting is the reverse of removal, ensuring to refill or top-up the cooling system. Start the engine and run it until it reaches normal operating temperature, with the cooling fan cutting in and out correctly.
