2008 Nissan Maxima Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What are the steps involved in the removal and installation process of a cylinder head on 2008 Nissan Maxima?
A: First, depressurise the fuel system and then isolate the fuel system and battery by separating the cable from the battery's negative terminal, next flush the coolant. Subsequently, take off timing belt, camshaft sprocket(s), and the rear timing belt cover, as well as the bolts fixing the coolant pipes to the cylinder head rear at the camshaft end plates. Continue to pull the intake manifold and place the fuel injectors and their connectors as well on the side and remainder of accessories such as the rocker arm assembly and the lifters and exhaust manifold(s). Dealer and unmate the hoses and electric connectors at the timing belt side of the engine. For the front cylinder head, first and foremost it is necessary to undo spark plug wires, distributor and coil, then having loosened it at the click locked up to the vehicle air conditioning compressor which is necessary to take out from its bracket without disconnecting refrigerant hoses. Taken off the compressor and alternator bracket; the bracket supporting the engine oil dipstick tube to the cylinder head. In the case of the rear cylinder head, remove the three brackets as well as the heater hoses which are located at the transaxle end. Unfasten the cylinder head bolts by turning them counter clockwise with thirty minutes as a stop point, until they can be turned by hand then should be undone in the reverse of the tightening sequence. All the washers together with the cylinder head bolts are to be removed, excluding the last small-bolt at the periphery; to do this, you may need to pry the cylinder head off the engine block with a wooden block and a hammer. For removal, loosen and take out the cylinder head gasket and in preparation for installation, make sure the surfaces are clean from oil and dirt. There might be some damage on the heads of the bolts or on the mating surfaces and the threads of the cylinder head bolt holes should be chased. Align the new gaskets over the dowel pins in the engine block, then properly seat the heads on the block without shifting the gaskets. There are new cylinder head bolts; do not overtighten them, just oil the threads lightly, install them without tools and make sure the washers are in the proper place. As with the previous process, perform it in five steps to tighten the bolts to the torque described, and then tighten the small bolt on the cylinder head flange. Climb back through the removal steps to finish the installation and refill new coolant, change the oil, and filter, and start the car to check for any leaks.
