Nissan 350Z Alternator Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace an alternator on Nissan 350Z?
A: If you are replacing the alternator, take the old one with you when purchasing a replacement unit, ensuring the new or rebuilt unit looks identical to the old alternator, with matching terminals in number, size, and location, as well as identical identification numbers stamped into the housing or printed on a tag. Many new and remanufactured alternators may not have a pulley installed, so you might need to switch the pulley from the old unit to the new one, and it's advisable to check the shop's policy regarding pulleys, as some may perform this service for free. Begin by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, then raise the front of the vehicle and secure it on jackstands. Remove the engine undercover, followed by the radiator fan assembly on 350Z models. Next, remove the alternator/power steering pump/fan drivebelt, then disconnect the electrical connector from the alternator by depressing the release tab and pulling up on the connector. Disconnect the electrical connector from the oil pressure switch and detach the switch harness clip from the lower alternator mounting bracket by depressing the release tab and pulling off the connector, then pry the harness clip loose. Detach the battery cable harness clip from the alternator battery terminal, remove the nut securing the battery cable to the terminal, and disconnect the battery cable from the B terminal. Remove the upper alternator mounting bolt, followed by the lower alternator mounting bolt and the mounting bracket bolt, then remove the mounting bracket and the alternator. Installation is the reverse of removal.
