Nissan Frontier Distributor Rotor

The Distributor Rotor in the Nissan Frontier delivers high ignition voltage to the cylinders of the engine in the correct firing order. The Distributor Rotor is placed on top of the distributor shaft inside the distributor cap. The rotor spins in step with the camshaft so each cylinder receives its current at the right time. Thus, the Frontier works well in all conditions. With each passing of the rotating arm above an output contact, a spark jumps the small gap toward the spark plug to ignite the mixture. The design of the cap and Distributor Rotor independently safeguards internal components from engine contaminants and maintains a flow path for high voltage. In overhead valve arrangements, the shaft bearing the rotor is gear driven by the camshaft, whereas overhead cam layouts may directly attach it, but in either case, the Distributor Rotor is synchronized with engine timing in the Nissan ignition assembly. The Distributor Rotor can shield against arcing and resist rotation because it handles high voltage. Thus, it is a reliable link in the Nissan ignition pathway for every cylinder in the Nissan Frontier.

Nissan Frontier Distributor Rotor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to check and replace Distributor Rotor, spark plug wires and distributor cap on Nissan Frontier?
    A:
This process is only suitable for four-cylinder and 3.3L V6 engines. Start by visually inspecting spark plug wires while the engine is running inside a well-ventilated, dark garage. Put up each wire to see if any flashing or sparks happen on damaged sections. If any flash occurs, write down that you should buy new wires and look at the distributor cap and rotor after the engine cools down. So as not to mix up their order, inspect each spark plug wire individually and number them appropriately. Twist and pull rubber boot to remove wire from spark plug. Check inside boot for corrosion and make sure that when pushing the wire and boot back onto the plug it fits snugly. Clean with a piece of cloth, looking whether there are any burns, cracks or other damages on the cable. Pull off rubber boot only when disconnecting a wire from the distributor; also check its fit as well as corrosion presence. Make sure also that other spark plug wires are secured at both ends before moving to inspect them further by checking if they are connected tightly at distributor and at spark plugs respectively. Where new wires are required, purchase an appropriate set for your engine model only, changing them one after another in order not to mess up with firing order. While detaching distributor cap find out if it has any cracks, carbon tracks or worn out or loose contacts. Look also at rotor for cracks as well as carbon tracks. The cap including its rotor should be replaced immediately incase of any damage or imperfections being observed on such components. If new spark plugs are installed then it is advisable to put in place a new cap plus rotor. However,in case you still want to use the old unit, you have to measure resistance between the contacts of wires using an ohmmeter (multimeter),and between the contacts of these cables with respect to ground across the housing plate of cap.If in this case, the resistance is in excess of the maximum specified, then the wires or cap has to be replaced. Therefore, when replacing a cap, start by moving only one wire at a time from the old cap to the corresponding place on the new one in order to avoid any firing order errors.
