The Starter Motor of the Nissan Juke uses battery power to generate the twisting force that cranks the car's engine so that the compact crossover can start with the turn of a key or the push of a button. The solenoid in the Starter Motor feeds a heavy-gauge current to field coils as well as a rotating armature. The armature spins in such a way as to push the drive gear into the flywheel. The connection is made through an overrunning clutch, which disengages as soon as ignition catches. The starter control circuit is designed with safety features. A relay plus a neutral or clutch switch means the engine will only start when a Nissan is out of gear. The early versions of Juke applied a conventional direct drive Starter Motor in which the armature was linked direct to the pinion. While effective, it was quite bulky. The later incarnations introduced a gear-reduction Starter Motor which enabled the inclusion of intermediate gears. This allowed for crankshaft movement at higher torque levels using a more compact electrical package. This not only reduced weight but also made cold starts easier.
