These models incorporate the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), well referred to as the airbags, which give the driver and the front seat passenger an utmost protection in the case of a head-on or frontal mishap. The first models contain only the driver's airbag in the stem of the wheel; while the models starting from 1995 contain a passenger airbag in the middle of the dashboard. From 1998, supplemental air bags are incorporated in the rear area of the front seats, mainly for side collision. Airbag modules have housing which contains a cushion and an inflator unit, inflator assembly starts the working of airbag at once on getting an electrical impulse through a clock spring which is a flat, ribbon like cable which does not break on rotation of the steering wheel. The diagnostic/control unit checks the system and contains a microprocessor and a crash sensor, and the lamps "AIRBAG" on the instrument panel light up if there are failure signals. For deployment, an impact sensor and a seating sensor need to go off and a back-up power source should be an essential power source in case the battery does not work. There is a self-diagnosis circuit to inform the driver about any failure and require its check. Bright yellow wiring harnesses that are located near the SRS system, during services; these harness should not be unplugged or connected to an electrical testing equipment, further more the SRS system has to be disabled by removal of battery cables for at least ten minutes prior to any work. Regarding the driver's side airbag it's enough to remove a panel and cut a connector, for the rebuy for the passenger side airbag, one has to open the glove box and cut a yellow harness. In the case of side impact air bags one has to pry around the seat's finish panel to get to the airbag connector. After service, the air bag connectors must be connected whereas the battery cables must be reconnected as well. There are specific processes to removing and installing the driver and passenger airbags Do not attempt to replace connectors or use self- locking nuts, other connectors unapproved for this use, or re-use of replacement fasteners; please be advised that all replacements have to be factory issued tamper proof bolts.
