For the starting point, it is necessary to remove the cable connected to the negative terminal of the battery. After that, take off the engine cover and the cowl cover and then fasten the opened ends of the coolant hoses that are connected to the throttle body and free them. Take of the air intake duct and separated the electrical connector away from the throttle body to take the throttle body off. Locate the PCV hose and any vacuum connected to the upper and lower manifolds and label then disconnect from the carburetor. Disconnect or remove the EVAP canister purge solenoid, V.I.A.S control solenoid valve and vacuum tank, power steering hose hanger, and the upper intake manifold hanger. Torque converter housing bolts to 90 ft-lb. Slowly ease the upper intake manifold mounting fasteners free to prevent warping of the gasket, then remove the upper intake manifold assembly, which includes the upper intake and the plenum/intake manifold runners. If replacing parts, unthread the fasteners holding the intake to the plenum and the power valve, again, starting loosely. Next, the mounting surfaces for the new gasket should be cleaned to remove any remains of the old gasket material and sealant used before, then new gasket and upper intake manifold assembly should be reattached. Screw the assembly and fasten the bolts progressively starting with the bolts in the middle. The rest of the installation process is the inversion of the removal and ending with the check of the coolant level and, if needed, topping it off. Remove the writers and reconnect the battery then do the normal re-learn procedures which should be done. For the lower intake manifold, cut the fuel injection and unscrew the fuel rail pressure, then unbolt the upper intake manifold. Pull off the fuel rail and the injectors; disconnect any other tapes that may hinder the removal of the lower intake manifold; also slacken the manifold bolts in a sequence that's opposite to the tightening sequence. Lift off the manifold ensuring that the gasket sealing surfaces should not get damaged, get rid of the previous gasket and sealant from the manifold and the cylinder heads using a scraper and clean the mating surfaces of the manifold, heads and gasket using brake system cleaner. Inspect the smoothness of the top surface of the manifold using a precision straightedge and the feeler gauge and if protruding should replace it. Replace the gaskets, place the lower manifold at the engine, aligning it on the studs and fix the bolts. If the nuts/bolts require to be tightened, this has to be done in several phases according to the correct tightening sequence. To do this carry out a reverse of the removal process for the upper intake manifold, reconnect the battery and do the relearn processes that is required.
