Nissan Quest Distributor

The Nissan Quest Distributor transmits high voltage from the ignition coil to each of the spark plugs, but in the correct firing order. This way, combustion begins at the right moment. Within a cast iron or aluminum housing, the Distributor is equipped with a camshaft-driven shaft. The mechanism spins a rotor that sits beneath the plastic cap. The cap has perimeter terminals that connect to every cylinder and a center post from the coil. As the shaft rotates, the rotor reaches each terminal, allowing current to flow through the plug wires to the spark plugs. Centrifugal weights that respond to engine speed and a vacuum diaphragm that reacts to manifold pressure change spark timing inside the Distributor, advancing or retarding ignition as conditions vary. The earlier units rely on a mechanical breaker point. The electronic version uses a toothed reluctor. It also uses a magnetic or hall sensor. It then opens and closes the circuit with the coil, thus requiring fewer maintenance needs. The Quest unit in Nissan service schedules is treated as a wear part, requiring periodic renewal of the cap and rotor. A dependable performance of the Distributor assists in easy starting and smooth running of Nissan Quest engines. A failing Distributor may cause a Nissan Quest misfire.

Nissan Quest Distributor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove a distributor on Nissan Quest?
    A:
The distributor can be removed by first unfastening the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Consequently, in order to disconnect the distributor cap cover, it is important to observe the elevated '1' on top of the cap located above number one cylinder spark plug wire terminal. The distributor ought to have its main electrical connector and ground connector disconnected. Subsequently, remove distributor cap bringing into line rotor with number one spark plug terminal by rotating engine using socket and breaker bar. To ensure proper reinstallation, make a mark at the edge of distributor base just below rotor tip and inline with it as well as same mark on engine block and distributor base. At this point, pull out the distributor straight after removing distributor hold-down bolt. In installing a distributor put it back into place in relation to engine block that was present when it was removed from it. Turn rotor slightly if required to mesh helical gears on camshaft and distributor. Once more ensure that their alignment marks are aligned fully after seating down of distributor. Loosely install hold-down bolt and then install and tighten the distributor cap on top of that bolt thread system while aligning them correctly. Put spark plug wires back in place correctly remembering to also reconnect all electrical connectors properly. Finally connect cable with negative battery terminal again, check/adjust ignition timing when necessary and lastly securely tighten up hold-down bolt of distribution valve. If there is any reinstalling process needed for the cover of a distributer cap do so now.
