- Q: How to remove and install the parking brake cables on the Nissan Xterra?A:Unplug the first wire from the negative end of the battery, take out the left under-dash panel, knee bolster, and the reinforcement piece that holds it. Taking off the dash, use locking pliers to easily remove the roll-pin from the parking brake handle shaft, and guide the cable through while aligning the support tube with the slots on the shaft. Take off the wire clip hooked to the cable casing on the bracket, and gently pull both wires down and out through the bracket hole. You first must unscrew a bolt to break the connection between the floor and the accelerator pedal stop, then step by step take off the left-side kick panel and sill pieces, peel back the driver's side carpet, and remove the bolts connecting the cable casing to the car's floorboard. With car raised high enough on jackstands to keep it secure, rotate a wing nut closest to the steering wheel axle, pull the elbow cable away from all supports, and draw it down through the floor while holding back the floorboard. To access the rear cables for 2WD Frontiers, first loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, raise safely using jackstands, adjust the equalizer's nut to allow slack, and disconnect the right rear cable from its coupling with the left rear cable. When working with either an Xterra or a 4WD Frontier, you loosen the adjusting nut, then leave the rear cable connected to its lever. Pull the cable out of the brackets that keep it attached to the frame rails, then take off the bolts. To remove rear brakes on a 2WD Frontier, start by uninstalling the brake shoes and disconnecting the cable from the lever on the last brake shoe, take off the casing bolted to the backing plate, and get rid of the whole cable and casing unit. To take the rear cable off the brake backing plate for Xterra or 4WD Frontier cars, disconnect the rear cable from the crank levers on both brake plate sides.
