Nissan Xterra Thermostat

Nissan Xterra Thermostat is the main temperature control device in the engine cooling system, keeping the powerplant within its recommended operating range. Situated close to the radiator, the Thermostat detects the temperature of the coolant and reacts through an expanding and contracting wax pellet mechanism with temperature. This motion opens or closes a valve, either allowing or preventing coolant flow to the radiator so that the engine does not overheat or run too cold. The Thermostat closes on warming to the set point, and due to this cycling action, the controlling, closing and opening, is called closed-loop action or system. Design applied to the Xterra and Nissan vehicles relies upon elementary mechanical components rather than electronic programming. The design allows for reliable temperature control essential to engine performance and efficiency. The steady functioning of the Thermostat helps in effective cabin heating for the Xterra by allowing the coolant to reach the heater core at proper temperature. All Nissan owners benefit from the Thermostat. Its reliable operation offers durability that Xterra users have come to expect from the Nissan name.

Nissan Xterra Thermostat Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to testing, remove, and replace a thermostat in a Nissan Xterra's cooling system?
    A:
To properly test a thermostat, suspend the (closed) thermostat on a string in a container of cold water, with a thermometer and heat the water on a stove. Write down the temperature when the thermostat begins to open and when it is fully open. If it doesn't work as specified, replace it. Disconnect the battery cable and drain the coolant. Remove the engine cooling fan, air cleaner, and air intake duct. Remove the upper radiator hose, unbolt the coolant tube, and loosen the hose clamp. Remove the thermostat housing cover, remove the drivebelts, and the water pump drain plug. Detach the lower radiator hose and the coolant by-pass hose, remove the intake manifold, detach the hose from the water outlet housing, and remove the water outlet cover. Scrape off any old gasket or sealant, clean them with lacquer thinner, and apply a bead of RTV sealant. Installation is the reverse of removal. Bolt the cover in place and wait for the sealant to cure. Refill and bleed the cooling system, run the engine, and check for leaks and proper operation.
