Q:
How to disconnect and remove the transfer case for a Nissan Pathfinder? Posted by Customer
A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, remove the skid plate, transfer case shift lever, front and rear driveshafts, torsion bars, all electrical connectors, vent hose, transmission mount from the cross member, transmission-to-tansfer case bolts, and make a final check that all wires and hoses have been disconnected from the transfer case. For installation, apply anaerobic gasket sealant to the transfer case-to-transmission mating surface, install the transmission-to-transfer case bolts in their proper locations and tighten them to the torque, refill the transfer case with the proper type and quantity of lubricant, and reinstall and adjust the torsion bars.

Q:
How to overhaul a transfer case and what considerations should be taken into account? Posted by Customer
A:
Overhauling a transfer case is a difficult job for the do-it-yourselfer, involving the disassembly and reassembly of many small parts with precise measurements and select-fit spacers and snap-rings. If transfer case problems arise, it can be removed and installed by a competent do-it-yourselfer but overhaul should be left to a transmission repair shop. Rebuilt transfer cases may be available - check with your dealer parts department and auto parts stores. An inexperienced mechanic can rebuild a transfer case if the special tools are available and the job is done in a deliberate step-by-step manner so nothing is overlooked, including internal and external snap-ring pliers, a bearing puller, a slide hammer, a set of pin punches, a dial indicator and possibly a hydraulic press, as well as a large, sturdy workbench and a vise or transmission stand. Before taking the transfer case apart for repair, it will help to have some idea what area of the transfer case is malfunctioning.
