To remove the centre console, start by disconnecting the battery negative terminal. For models with a centre armrest, lift the armrest, undo the retaining screw, and remove the trim panel. Then, undo the three bolts securing the armrest to the centre console and take it out. Carefully prise free the gear lever gaiter surround and fold the gaiter over the gear lever knob. Next, lift up the centre console upper finisher from the rear to release the retaining clips, then move it to the rear and remove it. Measure and record the length of exposed thread on the handbrake cable, then slacken the adjustment nut to facilitate easier removal of the centre console. Move the front seats fully forward, then pull the console rear finisher towards the rear to release the retaining pawls and clips. Undo the centre console rear retaining screws on each side, then move the front seats fully to the rear. Working on one side at a time, remove the footwell trim panels by pulling out the centre pin and removing the expanding plastic rivet, then pull away the rear of the panel to release the clips. Undo the centre console front retaining screws on each side and the two screws securing the console to the gear lever housing. With the handbrake lever fully pulled up, lift the centre console at the rear, slide it back, and remove it from the car. For refitting, reverse the removal process, ensuring the handbrake adjustment nut is screwed back down to the noted measurement, and adjust the handbrake if necessary.
