The evaporator core is located inside the housing between the heater housing and blower housing. Before replacing an evaporator core, determine for certain that the core is leaking by having a leak test performed with special equipment at a dealer service department or automotive air conditioning repair facility. Read all of the steps before beginning this procedure. If you are going to replace the evaporator, have the refrigerant discharged and recovered at a dealer or air conditioning service shop. Disconnect the refrigerant lines at the firewall. Remove the glove box assembly and the right-side under-dash panel. Remove the four screws and the reinforcement bar in the glove box area. Disconnect the electrical connectors at the evaporator and blower housings. Remove the bolts retaining the blower/evaporator case to the firewall. Remove the screws and separate the two halves of the case to remove the evaporator core. Installation is the reverse of the removal process. Add 1.5 to 2.5 ounces of new refrigerant oil to the new evaporator core's outlet tube. Before the lines are reconnected, it's a good idea to replace the evaporator core orifice. On some models, there is an optional, auxiliary rear heater/air conditioning system located behind the left-rear interior trim panel (behind the left-rear wheel housing). The assembly includes a blower, heater core, and evaporator core. Removal and installation procedures for the rear evaporator core are the same as for the rear heater core. The rear evaporator core can be removed when the heater/evaporator housing is disassembled by taking out the screws retaining the two halves together. If the rear evaporator core is being replaced, add 1.5 to 2.5 ounces of new refrigerant oil to the new evaporator. Whenever the rear evaporator core is replaced, it's a good idea to also replace the orifice tube. The orifice tube for the rear evaporator is located in the refrigerant line under the left-rear of the chassis. Have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested by the dealer service department or an air conditioning repair facility.
