All models feature a two-speed electric fan mounted in a plastic shroud attached to the back of the radiator. Fan operation is regulated by both the PCM and high/low-speed fan relays, with the coolant temperature sensor providing input to the PCM regarding engine temperature. During warm idle, the low-speed relay activates the fan at a low speed. When the coolant temperature reaches 221 degrees F, the PCM activates high-speed relays 1 and 2, causing the fan to run at high speed. Two high-speed relays are employed for redundancy, ensuring proper cooling even if one relay fails or in case of coolant temperature sensor failure. Continuous fan operation may indicate issues with the coolant temperature sensor or relays. To test, warm the engine until the gauge indicates the high side of NORMAL; the fan should activate. If not, inspect the cooling system fan control fuses in both the engine compartment and interior fuse panels. If the fuses are fine, disconnect the electric fan motor's electrical connector and test the fan motor using jumper wires to connect the black wire terminal to ground and apply battery voltage to each of the other terminals. If the fan doesn't work or operates at only one speed, consider replacing the motor. If it works with jumper wires but not under normal conditions, use a voltmeter to check for battery voltage at the power terminals on the fan connector. Verify the ground circuit's integrity with an ohmmeter. If resistance exceeds 5 ohms, trace the ground wire circuit to the chassis. Finally, if there's no power at the terminals, inspect power supply to the low-speed fan relay, checking for constant voltage at one socket and key-dependent voltage at the other. For replacement, disconnect the electrical connector from the radiator fan motor, detach the upper radiator hose and overflow hose, and remove the fan shroud assembly by undoing the mounting bolts and carefully separating the fan from the motor shaft using a hammer and blunt punch. Installation follows the reverse of removal.
