Removal
1. Park on level ground, chock remaining wheels, raise vehicle with a jack and support securely on quality jack stands.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable and stow it away from terminals.
3. Remove the wheel and any splash shields or trim that block access to the axle/hub area.
4. Remove brake components as needed (caliper or rotor) to gain access to the axle end and companion flange.
5. Loosen and remove any axle retaining fastener(s) (nut, bolt, or clip) if present, and remove any cotter pin or locking device.
6. Support the transmission or differential output flange as needed to prevent movement when flange fasteners are removed.
7. Remove the companion flange retaining fastener(s) at the transmission/differential output; hold the flange to prevent it from turning if necessary.
8. Separate the companion flange from the shaft-use a proper puller or gently pry while avoiding damage to splines and seal surfaces.
9. Cover or bag the CV joint/axle to prevent contamination and inspect nearby seals and bearings for wear.
Installation
1. Clean mating surfaces on the companion flange and transmission/differential output; replace the output seal or gasket if required.
2. Position the companion flange onto the shaft, aligning splines or marks made during removal; slide the flange on evenly without cocking.
3. Install flange retaining fastener(s) by hand, then snug progressively in a crisscross pattern if multiple fasteners are used.
4. Reinstall any axle retaining nut/clip and any cotter pin or locking device that secures the axle to the hub.
5. Reinstall brake components, splash shields, and wheel; lower the vehicle to the ground.
6. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
7. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, abnormal noises, or driveline binding with the vehicle stationary and in gear (use parking brake).
8. Perform a careful low-speed road test listening and feeling for vibration or noise, then recheck and retighten fasteners to the manufacturer's specifications if required.
Repair tip: Use new wheel/axle fasteners and a replacement output seal where recommended, and keep the CV joint free of dirt or solvent during the job.
