While putting the lower steering joint onto the steering gear, straighten the front wheels first. Then insert the joint until both wheels and slot line up.

Put the car up on jackstands, then safely hold it there. With the Ball Joint Remover tool HT72520000 or similar, take the tie rod end off from the steering knuckle. Take off the screws holding the steering gear, but keep them in place. Use markings and carefully take out the steering column lower connection. Unbolt and remove the steering gear assembly. Put the steering gear assembly in place on the vehicle. Be sure to align the tie rod nut to specific tightness measures. Tighten the joint screw connecting the lower part of the steering system to its gear to 23-31 pound-force foot-lbs. across all models. Keep your eyes on the wheels as you put the lower steering joint into the steering gear. Both your wheels and the steering joint slot should be facing straight towards their mark on the steering gear cap or spacer. Check front end alignment if necessary. It's best practice to have licensed steering gear experts handle manual steering gear overhauls, because buying separate parts is usually more expensive than getting a whole new rebuilt unit.
