Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Loosen the right-front wheel lug nuts. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Drain the cooling system. If the coolant is relatively new, or is in good condition, save it and re-use it. Remove the right front wheel and the inner fender splash shield. On 2007 and 2008 models, remove the drivebelt auto tensioner. For 2009 and later models, loosen (but do not remove) the water pump mounting bolts. Remove tension from the drivebelt and remove the drivebelt. Remove the water pump pulley bolts and remove the pulley. Remove the water pump bolts and separate the pump from the pump housing. If the pump is stuck, gently tap it with a soft faced hammer to break the gasket seal. When the pump is removed, coolant can leak from the engine block. Have a container ready to catch the excess coolant. Inspect the pump. Replace the unit if there is dirt or debris on the water pump impeller, the impeller turns smoothly by hand, the shaft is not loose, or the shaft has excessive play. Remove all old gasket material and clean the mating surfaces of the water pump and engine block. Avoid hitting or bumping the impeller against other pans during installation. Place a new gasket on the water pump and install the pump to the housing. Tighten the pump-to-housing bolts, a little at a time working in a criss-cross pattern, to the torque. On 2009 and later models, tighten the water pump pulley bolts to the torque. Installation is the reverse of removal. Refill the cooling system. Reconnect the battery and perform the necessary re-learn procedures. Start the engine and check for any leaks. Re-check coolant fluid levels and add if necessary.
