Q:
What are the components and functions of the fuel pump and lines in Nissan Maxima? Posted by Customer
A:
Regarding the fuel pump and lines, in 2001 and earlier models, fuel circulates through a pair of metal lines underneath the vehicle, from the fuel tank to the fuel injection system and back to the tank. A fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail opens to return fuel to the tank when it reaches a predetermined pressure level. However, 2002 and later models lack a fuel return line, with the fuel pressure regulator positioned in the fuel tank, allowing excess fuel to return to the tank. In all models, an electric fuel pump and sending unit are housed within the fuel tank, and on 2000 and later models, the fuel filter is also located inside the tank. On 2004 and later models, a single assembly combines the fuel pump, pressure regulator, sending unit, and fuel filter. A vapor return system directs vapors back to the fuel tank through a dedicated return line. The fuel pump relay comprises primary and secondary voltage circuits, with the primary circuit under PCM control and the secondary circuit linked directly to battery voltage via the ignition switch. During key-on (engine off), the PCM activates the relay for five seconds. While cranking, the PCM supplies voltage to the fuel pump relay as long as it receives a position signal from the camshaft or crankshaft position sensor. In the absence of this signal, the fuel pump shuts off after five seconds. Additionally, 1995 California emissions models and all 1996 and 1997 models feature a fuel pump control module that reduces voltage to the fuel pump except during cranking, heavy loads, or high-speed operation, with the module located in the trunk behind the left tail light, and a dropping resistor situated in the wiring harness near the control module. The exhaust system comprises exhaust manifolds, a diverter pipe with an oxygen sensor, a catalytic converter, a muffler, and a tailpipe. For 1995 and later models, two primary oxygen sensors, two warm-up catalytic converters, and a secondary oxygen sensor are included. Catalytic converters serve as emission control devices, reducing pollutants in the exhaust system, and for more details on catalytic converters, Chapter 6 can be referenced.

Q:
What's the procedure for removing the fuel pump assembly in the 1997 Nissan Maxima? Posted by Customer
A:
For 2004 and later models, you should disconnect the hoses and electrical connector from the top of the fuel pump assembly, unscrew the locking ring, and lift the assembly out of the tank. Ensure the fuel lines are positioned correctly, then tighten the mounting bolts or lock ring securely, connect the electrical connector, and reinstall the access cover and rear seat.
