Q:
How to remove and install the coolant reservoir and radiator? Posted by Customer
A:
The coolant reservoir is located in different positions depending on the model year. For 1993 and 1994 models, it is mounted next to the battery in the left corner of the engine compartment, while for 1995 and later models, it is mounted in the front right corner. To remove the reservoir, detach the hose from the top of the radiator and pinch it off. If there are mounting bolts, unbolt them and remove the reservoir. If there are no mounting bolts, lift the reservoir straight up out of its bracket. After removing the reservoir, pour the coolant into a container. Clean the reservoir inside and out, inspect it for cracks and damage, and replace it if necessary. To install the reservoir, follow the reverse of the removal process. To remove the radiator, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. On 2004 and later models, remove the engine cover and the air cleaner duct. Unbolt the engine compartment power distribution module and set it aside. Set the parking brake, block the rear wheels, and raise the front of the vehicle on jackstands. Drain the cooling system and disconnect the automatic transmission cooler lines if equipped. Loosen the hose clamps and detach the radiator hoses from the radiator. If the hoses are stuck, twist them with slip joint pliers to break the seal and carefully pull them off. Remove the engine cooling fan assembly. Depending on the model year, either unbolt the small brackets attaching the top of the radiator to the radiator support or spread apart the locking tabs on the clips securing the upper end of the radiator to the mounting bushings. Lift out the radiator, being careful not to spill coolant or scratch the paint. Inspect the radiator for leaks and damage, and have it repaired if necessary. Clean the radiator from bugs and dirt by spraying it with a garden hose nozzle from the back side, and flush it out with a garden hose before reinstalling. Check the radiator mounts for deterioration and replace if needed. Install the radiator by guiding it into the mounts until they seat properly. Refill and bleed the cooling system. Start the engine, check for leaks, and allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature. Once cooled, recheck the coolant level and add more if needed. Finally, check and add automatic transmission fluid if necessary.
