When inspecting the steering and suspension components, you should check for damage, distortion, and leaks. Pay attention to seals, boots, bushings, control arms, tie-rod ends, and ball joints.

For disassembling the outer CV joint, the procedure depends on the type of boot used: If the outer boot is plastic, replace the entire drive axle assembly if it's damaged. For other models with a rubber boot, start by removing the boot clamps and separating the boot from the outer CV joint. Next, clamp the axleshaft in a bench vise and use a brass hammer to drive off the outer CV joint. Remove the retainer ring for the inner race and slide off the old boot. Wash the outer CV joint with clean solvent and rinse it with brake system cleaner.

Clean the lower end of the steering knuckle and check for movement at the steering knuckle-to-control arm ball joint.
