Pull out the vehicle toolbox, position the front tires so they point ahead, disconnect from the battery's negative post first, followed by the positive post, and turn off the airbags through the system. Stabilize your steering by turning the ignition key to LOCK position. Leaving the key in the LOCK position prevents the clockspring from being broken as it rotates alongside the steering shaft. By looking under the hood, write down where the transfer gear sits on a Pathfinder. When the steering wheel is straight ahead, line up the gap in the intermediate shaft with the mark on the end piece. Fix the final piece through the projection on top of the transfer gear assembly. Put a mark on where the coupler bolt is. Then accurately note how the intermediate shaft fits with the steering column shaft. Unfasten the pinch bolt. Pull the intermediate shaft away from the transfer gear assembly on Pathfinder models, then take it down off the steering gear input shaft. Reassemble the system following these steps, always matching the marks correctly and tightening the coupler bolts to their right torque before replacement. Place the cutout on the intermediate shaft so it faces the pinch bolt when reinstalling.
