Q:
How to remove and install the intermediate shaft on Nissan Pathfinder? Posted by Customer
A:
Park the vehicle with the wheels pointing straight ahead. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, then the positive battery terminal. Disable the airbag system. Turn the ignition key to the LOCK position to prevent the steering shaft from turning. If this is not done, the airbag clockspring could be damaged. Working under the hood, mark the relationship of the intermediate shaft to the steering gear input shaft (Frontier and Xterra.models) (Intermediate shaft-to-steering gear pinch bolt) or the transfer gear assembly (Pathfinder models) (When the steering is centered, the gap on the intermediate shaft is aligned with the mark on the end cap and the projection on the transfer gear is the pinch bolt (Pathfinder models)). Remove the coupler bolt. Mark the relationship of the intermediate shaft to the steering column shaft, then remove the pinch bolt (Steering column-to-intermediate shaft pinch bolt). Slide the intermediate shaft up and off the steering gear input shaft (Frontier and Xterra models) or the transfer gear assembly (Pathfinder models), then pull the shaft down off the steering gear input shaft. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to align the matchmarks and tighten the coupler bolts to the torque values. If the intermediate shaft has a cutout near the top, the cutout must face the pinch bolt.
