Nissan 31918-31X13 Neutral Safety Switch

Note that this procedure applies to 2003 and earlier models. For 2004 models, the switch is adjusted by adjusting the control cable. The adjustment steps are: 1. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual lever. 2. Loosen the switch retaining screws. 3. Set the manual lever at the Neutral position and insert a 0.16-inch pin (or a 5/32-inch drill bit) through the adjustment holes in both the manual shaft lever and the switch, ensuring the pin is perpendicular to both. 4. Tighten the switch retaining screws securely. 5. Recheck the switch continuity. If it is still not as specified, replace the switch.

To test the transaxle range sensor, disconnect the electrical connectors, which include an 8-pin connector and a 2-pin connector that governs the starter circuit. Move the shift lever into each position and check for continuity between the indicated terminals. If continuity isn't as designated, attempt to adjust the switch, and if adjustment fails, replace the switch.
