Q:
How do you diagnose and adjust the Park/Neutral position start switch if the engine starts in positions other than Park or Neutral? Posted by Customer
A:
If the engine will start with the shift lever in any position other than Park or Neutral, check and adjust the Park/Neutral position start switch by following the wiring harness from the switch to its electrical connectors and unplugging the switch electrical connectors. Check continuity with the shift lever in Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, 2, andIf the switch fails any of these continuity checks, disconnect the shift cable from the manual lever and retest the switch. If the switch passes all the continuity checks, reconnect the shift cable and adjust it, then retest the switch. If the switch still fails any of the continuity tests, remove it from the transmission and try testing it again on the bench. If the switch passes all the continuity tests on the bench, install it and adjust it by disconnecting the shift cable from the manual lever, loosening the switch retaining screws, setting the manual lever at the Neutral position and inserting a 0.16-inch pin (or a 5/32-inch drill bit) through the adjustment holes in both the manual shaft lever and the switch. Make sure the pin is perpendicular to the switch and the lever, then tighten the switch retaining screws securely and remove the pin. Recheck the switch continuity and if switch continuity is still not as specified, replace the switch. Place the ignition key in the Off position, remove the key from the lock cylinder, shift the transmission into Neutral, follow the wiring harness from the switch to its electrical connectors, unplug the electrical connectors, remove the switch retaining screws and remove the switch. Installation is the reverse of removal and don't tighten the retaining screws until you have adjusted the switch. Reconnect and adjust the shift cable.

Q:
How do I diagnose and replace the Neutral position switch for the Nissan Pathfinder? Posted by Customer
A:
Place the shift lever in the Neutral position, unplug the electrical connector from the Neutral position switch and, using an ohmmeter, check for continuity across the terminals of the switch. If not, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, unplug the Neutral position switch electrical connector, unscrew the switch from the transmission case, apply RTV sealant or Teflon tape to the threads of the new switch to prevent leakage, install the switch in the transmission case and tighten it securely, and plug in the electrical connector.
