To determine if the engine will start with the shift lever in any position other than Park or Neutral, check and adjust the neutral start switch. Unplug the switch electrical connectors and check continuity: with the shift lever in Park, there should be continuity between terminals 1 and 2, and between terminals 3 and 4; in Reverse, continuity should exist between terminals 3 and 5; in Neutral, continuity should be present between terminals 1 and 2, and between terminals 3 and 6; in Drive, continuity should be between terminals 3 and 7; in 2, between terminals 3 and 8; and in 1, between terminals 3 and 9. If the switch fails any continuity checks, disconnect the shift cable from the manual lever and retest the switch. If the switch passes all continuity checks after this, reconnect the shift cable, adjust it, and retest the switch. If it still fails any tests, remove it from the transaxle and test it again on the bench. If it passes on the bench, install and adjust it; if it fails, replace it. For adjustment, disconnect the shift cable from the manual lever, loosen the switch retaining screws, set the manual lever to Neutral, and insert a 0.16-inch pin or a 5/32-inch drill bit through the adjustment holes in both the manual shaft lever and the switch, ensuring the pin is perpendicular. Tighten the switch retaining screws securely and recheck the switch continuity. If continuity is still not as specified, replace the switch. For replacement, disconnect the negative cable from the battery, shift the transaxle into Neutral, unplug the switch electrical connectors, remove the switch retaining screws, and take out the switch. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring not to tighten the retaining screws until the switch has been adjusted.
