Q:
How to replace the thermostat on a Nissan Versa? Posted by Customer
A:
On 2007 and 2008 models, the thermostat housing is bolted onto the engine block. On 2009 and later models, the thermostat housing is integrated with the engine block. Drain the cooling system. If the coolant is relatively new, or is in good condition, save it and reuse it. For 2007 and 2008 models, remove the water inlet-to-thermostat housing mounting bolts and remove the water inlet. If the water inlet is stuck, tap it with a soft-face hammer to jar it loose. Be prepared for some coolant to spill as the gasket seal is broken. Clean the mating surfaces of all gasket or sealant. Remove the thermostat. For 2009 and later models, remove the fresh air intake duct and the coolant reservoir. Note the orientation and position of the lower radiator tube before removal. Loosen the clamp and remove the lower radiator hose from the engine. If the hose is stuck, grasp it near the end with a pair of large adjustable pliers and twist it to break the seal, then pull it off. If the hose is old or deteriorated, cut it off and install a new one. Detach the oil level gauge guide from the clip attached to the water inlet and move it aside. Remove the water inlet-to-thermostat housing mounting bolts and remove the water inlet. If the water inlet is stuck, tap it with a soft-face hammer to jar it loose. Be prepared for some coolant to spill as the gasket seal is broken. Clean the mating surfaces of all gasket or sealant. Remove the thermostat from the thermostat housing. Install a new sealing ring onto the thermostat, then insert the thermostat into the housing. Make sure that the air bleed valve, or jiggle valve faces up, and the spring end of the valve is directed toward the engine. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the fasteners to the torque values. Refill the cooling system. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature, then check for leaks and proper thermostat operation.
