Q:
How to replace or test the thermostat in a Nissan 300ZX? Posted by Customer
A:
The thermostat, a restriction valve actuated by a heat sensitive element, is mounted inside a housing on the right-front side of the engine. It opens and closes at predetermined temperatures to allow coolant to warm up or cool the engine. To replace or test the thermostat, drain the cooling system, remove the fan and shroud, and the drivebelts. Jack up the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the lower radiator hose from the metal water suction tube by loosening the hose clamps and support bracket bolts. Loosen the remaining hose clamp and remove the water suction tube from the vehicle. Remove the three thermostat housing retaining bolts and the housing from the engine. If necessary, use a soft-face hammer to tap the housing to break the gasket seal. Lift the thermostat from its recessed cavity, noting which end is up. Scrape off all traces of gasket and sealant from the gasket mounting surfaces. Insert the new thermostat into the housing with the spring side in the block. The thermostat should seat into the recessed cavity. Apply gasket sealer to both sides of the new gasket and install the gasket onto the thermostat housing. Install the thermostat housing onto the block, ensuring the arrow on the cover is pointing up. Tighten the housing retaining bolts to the proper specification. Reverse the remaining removal procedures, installing new hose clamps if necessary.
