    Q:
How to remove the steering wheel on Nissan Xterra? Posted by Customer
    A:
Carefully detach the wire from first the car's negative battery terminal, then the positive terminal. Wait 10 minutes before starting the repair work. Take off the small panel under the steering wheel and disconnect the plug for the airbag control unit. Pull off both side panels on the dashboard and unscrew the two Torx bolts they hide, taking out the old bolts and keeping the new ones ready for installation. In some cases, a screw fastens switches for cruise control or stereo control instead of a protective cover. Unplug the steering wheel airbag module then lift it off from its position on the steering wheel. Turn the wheel fully forward until the front wheels point straight ahead. Before you take off the wheel, find the steering shaft's nut and scrollable retaining bolt. Note how the wheel matches up with the steering shaft, then mark this before removing the wheel. Pull out the wiring plug that runs to the cruise control and if present, remove the horn connection too. Loosen the steering wheel from the shaft using a special puller tool and protect wiring attached to the airbag and cruise control computer. Pull the clockspring off the steering column when you need to check or replace steering column switches. If you do remove it, tape the center and outer rings together so the steering shaft doesn't rotate. Make sure your front wheels face directly forward and match the dashboard cancel button to its corresponding slot on the combo switch only when you've taken out the clockspring. Twist the clockspring clockwise until it stops, then turn it counterclockwise by 2.5 times for vehicles with power steering or four full turns for non-power steering vehicles. This time, line up the arrow below the clockspring with the pin on its center hub. Put the wires for the airbag module and cruise control through the steering wheel, putting them correctly in the clockspring pin guides when you fasten the wheel. When you separated the horn connector earlier, connect it back. Also install the steering wheel retaining nut tightly, then attach and tighten the airbag module. Install fresh Torx bolts instead of reusing old ones. Put on the cruise control and stereo control buttons if you have them, after that reconnect the airbag wiring and then put on the bottom panel. Begin the car, turn the steering wheel hard left and right to make sure the clockspring is correctly centered, then check if the airbag function works by turning the key to On, listening for three seconds while the "AIR BAG" warning light comes on before switching it back off.
