Don't forget that the engine should be cold. You can remove the cylinder head with the intake manifold still attached, and then remove the manifold on a workbench. Begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable, removing the upper timing chain, and inserting a wedge for timing chain tensioner down through the opening in lower timing chain cover, making sure it is wedged between the narrowest part of the lower timing chain. Slowly mark on the lower timing chain and idler sprocket, then unscrew idler sprocket bolt but ensure that idler gear and lower timing chain are still engaged and lying over timing chain wedge. Next thing is to take off lifters and camshafts including exhaust manifold as well as label or pull off any other remaining components that are attached onto cylinder head. The loosening sequence has to be according to specific instructions such that cylinder head bolts are loosened at 1/4 turns until they can be taken out by hand. Lift up the cylinder head from the engine block when necessary using a pry bar at a casting protrusion. All external components must be removed from cylinder heads before they are cleaned and inspected for cracks and warpage. It is important to clean all surfaces where cylinder head meets block so as to ensure there is no damage left unattended to. Clean out all holes in threads of cylinder head bolt with a thread chaser thoroughly. Cylinder heads must also be checked for cracks, warpage in intake manifolds involved in this process includes intake & exhaust manifolds. Replace original components, position new cylinder head gasket correctly on it, apply clean engine oil on bolt threads of cylinder heads together with hardened washers before tightening them in required pattern in order to prevent leaking during reinstallation. Put back lifters, shims and camshafts but if necessary whereby they have been refaced on cylinder's machined top surface you will have to set valve clearances. Check that the idler gear/idler shaft bolt aligns with reference marks and remove timing chain wedge. Cover upper timing chain and upper sealing strip, then do installation steps in reverse order for lower timing chain and accessory drive system. Lastly, fill the cooling system refill with coolant oil and change the engine oil as well as filter before putting engine to work and check for leaks.
