To disconnect the axle shaft begin by removing the wheel trim, then using a rather big nut wrench to undo the cotter pin, the nut lock on top of the felt washer of the axle shaft/hub nut. Loosen the hub nut with a socket and large breaker bar with the wheel still on the ground; if the socket does not fit, then remove the wheel and install a loaner. The outer CV joints are of the "Rzeppa" (pronounced "sheppa") or "Birfield" type, which consist of ball bearings running between an inner race and an outer cage. These joints are capable of angular movement but not axial movement. They should be cleaned, inspected, and repacked whenever an outer CV joint boot is replaced, but they cannot be disassembled. If an outer joint is damaged, it must be replaced.
