    How to remove Axle Shaft on Nissan Maxima? Posted by Customer

    To disconnect the axle shaft begin by removing the wheel trim, then using a rather big nut wrench to undo the cotter pin, the nut lock on top of the felt washer of the axle shaft/hub nut. What if the socket won't go on the nut. Loosen the hub nut with a socket and large breaker bar with the wheel still on the ground; if the socket does not fit, then remove the wheel and install a loaner. Before removing the wheel, one needs to loosen the wheel lug nuts, lift the vehicle and support it on jackstands. Next, loosen and then remove the axle shaft/hub nut and washer, it may be necessary to use a prybar to hold the hub in place so it does not turn while the nut and washer are being removed. If the splines of the axle shaft are frozen, hit its end lightly with soft-faced hammer or brass-punch to unfreeze them. There are engine splash shields-Open and set aside and locate a drain pan below the transaxle in case some of the lubricant spills. Correctly disconnect the strut from the steering knuckle then separate the axle shaft from the hub and kindly do not pull the brake hose; in case this becomes necessary, take away the caliper along with the hose and suspend it using the spring. For the left axle shaft, gently lift the inner cv boot joint out of the transaxle and finally pull the assembly. To disassemble the right axle shaft, first, you have a three-bolt connection with the support bracket, which should be removed and the position of the bearing relative to the bracket should be noted. If the left axle shaft cannot be pried out, unbolt the right side and with a screwdriver hit and knock the left side shaft out. While the installation process, the reverse procedure must be followed then new retaining clip on the left axle shaft's inner CV joint, tightening of support bearing retainer bolts for the right axle shaft, fitting of the wheel and tightening of lug nuts, lowering the vehicle and tightening of lug nuts must be done. Last, however, again and for the final time, tighten the axle shaft/hub nut and place the felt washer, nut lock and a new cotter pin then, check the transaxle or differential lubrication and add if necessary.

    The outer CV joints are of the "Rzeppa" (pronounced "sheppa") or "Birfield" type, which consist of ball bearings running between an inner race and an outer cage. These joints are capable of angular movement but not axial movement. They should be cleaned, inspected, and repacked whenever an outer CV joint boot is replaced, but they cannot be disassembled. If an outer joint is damaged, it must be replaced.
