- Q: How to remove and install the rear shock absorber MacPherson strut on 1989 Nissan 240sx?A: Rise the car gently, securing the front wheels. Raise it just enough that the rear spring cannot bear any weight. From the trunk, rotate each cover located above strut mountings, and loosen the struts by taking off their nuts. Pop off the bolt that connects the strut to the lower arm and then lift out the strut from its place. First tighten the upper end by hand, then connect the lower strut end to the transverse link. Following that, fix the upper nuts to 12-14 foot-pounds force and the bottom bolt to 65-80 foot-pounds force. During strut work, keep all parts clean. You might have to replace the shock absorber assembly if you don't install the shock absorber kit. Adjust the strut mounting insulator position when reconnecting the car, then put a spring compressor on, squeeze the spring down until the spring insulator rotates freely on its own. When removing the stop locknut, keep the threads of the piston rod from breaking by using an appropriate tool to take out the packing, forcing down the piston rod until the bottom strikes. Remove both sides of the strut cylinder and guide. Put 11.2 fluid ounces for nonadjustable struts and 11 fluid ounces for adjustable struts into the cylinder, using the manufacturer-approved fluid.
