- Q: How to remove and install the Solid Rear Axle Shaft on 1991 Nissan 240sx?A: Bearings must be pressed on and off the shaft with an arbor press, and without access to one, attempting any repair work on the axle shaft and bearing assemblies is inadvisable. Begin by removing the hub cap or wheel cover and loosening the lug nuts. Raise the rear of the car and support it safely on stands, then remove the rear wheel and the four brake backing plate retaining nuts, detaching the parking brake linkage from the brake backing plate. Attach a slide hammer to the axle shaft to remove it, and use a slide hammer and a two-pronged puller to extract the oil seal from the housing; if a slide hammer is unavailable, the axle can sometimes be pried out using pry bars on opposing sides of the hub. If excessive end play is found, the bearing should be replaced, as shimming is not recommended due to potential improper seating. Carefully nick the bearing retainer in three or four places with a chisel, ensuring it is only collapsed enough to slide off the shaft. Pull or press the old bearing off and install the new one by pressing it into position, followed by the outer bearing retainer with its raised surface facing the wheel hub, and then the bearing and inner bearing retainer in that order on the axle shaft. With the smaller chamfered side of the inner bearing retainer facing the bearing, press on the retainer until it fully touches the bearing. Clean the oil seal seat in the rear axle housing and apply a thin coat of chassis grease. Use a seal installation tool to drive the oil seal into the rear axle housing, wiping a thin coat of bearing grease on the lips of the seal. Determine the number of retainer gaskets needed for the correct bearing-to-outer retainer clearance of 0.25mm. Insert the axle shaft assembly into the axle housing, ensuring not to damage the seal and that the shaft splines engage those of the differential pinion, aligning the vent holes of the gasket and the outer bearing retainer before installing the retaining bolts. Finally, install the nuts on the bolts and tighten them evenly in a criss-cross pattern to 20 ft.lbs.
