2004 Nissan Pathfinder Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and reinstall the front axle shaft assembly and related components in a 2004 Nissan Pathfinder's suspension system?
A: First, lift up the car and fix jackstands below, remove the under-body splash guard, and disconnect the vent hose from the differentials. Put a marker on how the driveshaft connects to the differential companion flange, take out the driveshaft connection from the flange, and keep the driveshaft supported with wire underneath the car. Slacken the bolts that hold each drive axle in place, let them hang by their weight, then fasten them down with metal wires through the vehicle's underbelly. Lift the front axle assembly with a floor jack until you can reach the two mounting bolts, then unscrew these bolts from the support brackets at each end of the axle/differential. Slowly let the floor jack lower the assembly down, then remove it from under the car. During reinstallment, make sure to tighten all mounting bolts well and grab the drive axle ends before twisting driveshaft nuts until they meet their right torque. Also, fill the differential with oil if it falls short of what's needed to get it to optimal levels.
