The Nissan 240SX Lash Adjuster is designed to maintain the precise motion of the valve while also automatically setting the clearance between the cam part and the valve. This prevents engine noise and wear as well. In earlier designs, a solid Lash Adjuster employed steel shims that the owner had to change when the clearances were altered. Subsequent Nissan 240SX engines utilized a hydraulic Lash Adjuster which acted in two ways. First, upon cranking, it uses oil pressure to push an internal piston, taking up slack each cycle for on-the-go adjustment. This ended the need for routine feeler-gauge sessions. Nissan aluminum heads facilitate smoother idle speeds and quicker starts while extending the cam's operating life by continually offsetting heat expansion. The Lash Adjuster on both styles is located between the cam lobe and the valve. As the cam turns, it translates cam rotation into straight valve lift. That is how modern tappets are described. Roller types are preferred due to their lower friction. Like the self-adjusting flat versions, they employ the same cam action for height adjustment. They have a wheel at the point where the cam touches the follower, which enables a more efficient stroke than other flat followers. - Q: How to replace lifters in an engine with a Lash Adjuster on Nissan 240sx?A:Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the Cylinder Head, if required. Remove the rocker arms and shafts. Withdraw the lash adjusters from the head or from the bore in the rocker. Tag each lash adjuster to the corresponding cylinder head opening or rocker. If the lash adjuster is installed in the rocker, remove the snapring first. Be careful not to bend the snapring during removal. Install the lash adjusters in their original locations. Use new lash adjuster snaprings as needed. New lash adjusters should be soaked in a bath of clean engine oil prior to installation to remove the air. Install the rocker arms and shafts. Install the cylinder head and leave the valve cover off. Check the lash adjusters for proper operation by pushing hard on each lash adjuster with fingertip pressure. If the lash adjuster moves more than 0.04 in. (1mm), air may be inside it. Make sure the rocker arm is not on the cam lobe when making this check. If there was air in the lash adjusters, bleed the air by running the engine at 1000 rpm for 10 minutes. All lash adjusters used on Datsun/Nissan engine applications are not overhauled--If a problem (noise or wear) exists replace the lash adjuster. When replacing a lash adjuster assembly it is recommended the entire set of lash adjusters be replaced.
