Nissan 300ZX Pilot Bearing

The Nissan 300ZX Pilot Bearing is a bearing within the flywheel that centers and supports the transmission input shaft, allowing for a smooth operation of the gearbox by keeping the engine and gearbox in alignment. The Pilot Bearing is located inside the flywheel/crankshaft and allows the shaft to rotate on polished inner and outer races, which prevents friction. This means that power gets from the engine to the drivetrain without losing any heat or creating wear and tear on the components, which would be the case with friction. The Nissan 300ZX produced two core styles throughout production: a true ball or roller Pilot Bearing and a sintered bronze bushing that serves the same task. The bearing style uses balls or small rollers that roll between races. It is ideal for applications with higher shaft speeds and where there are mixed radial and axial loads. The bushing relies on an oil film inside a bronze sleeve, thus it is for lighter demands. It also offers self-lubrication if the material is porous. The condition of the Pilot Bearing matters because failure causes vibration, gear clash, and noise. A properly functioning Pilot Bearing will contribute to a crisp clutch engagement, protect your transmission components, and further maximize the longevity of your legendary Nissan 300ZX.

Nissan 300ZX Pilot Bearing Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a Pilot Bearing on Nissan 300ZX?
    A:
With the transmission removed, next is the clutch disc and pressure plate as explained above followed by the removal of the clutch disc as described above. The pilot bushing requires that a special tool should be used to remove it; this tool is commonly known as the Nissan tool, and it can be bought from wish a Nissan dealer or an auto parts store. If the above tool is not available, fill the recess behind the bushing with grease so as to force out the same from the crankshaft. You insert a rod with an equal inside diameter to that of the bushing, and then strike it with a hammer; this will force grease in to push the bushing from the recess. One should properly clean the bushing recess before fitting the new bushing. If a new bushing is required, it is to be inserted through an appropriately fit socket or tubing that should fit the recess. Last but not the least, re-fitting of the clutch assembly and the transmission assembly should be done.
