Nissan 350Z Parking Brake Shoe Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How to replace and adjust rear brake shoes including break-in procedure?
A: Remove the rear Brake Discs. Measure the thickness of the lining material on the shoes. If the lining has worn down to 1.5 mm or less, replace the shoes. Inspect the drum portion of the disc for scoring, grooves, or cracks due to heat. If any of these conditions exist or there is significant wear to the drum, the disc must be replaced. Wash off the brake parts with brake system cleaner. Follow the accompanying illustrations for the brake shoe replacement procedure: Turn the adjuster until it's at its shortest setting (the threads disappear into the adjuster). Remove the adjuster spring. Remove the adjuster. Remove the return spring. Remove the rear shoe hold-down retainer, spring, pin, and shoe. Remove the forward shoe hold-down retainer, spring, pin, and shoe. Clean the backing plate thoroughly, then lubricate the brake shoe contact areas on the plate with high-temperature grease. Clean and lubricate the adjuster. Place the forward shoe in position and install the hold-down retainer, spring, and pin. Place the rear shoe in position and install the hold-down retainer, spring, and pin. Install the return spring. Install the adjuster. Install the adjuster spring. Be sure to stay in order and read the caption under each illustration. Note: Work on one side at a time using the opposite side for reference as necessary. Install the brake disc and use two lug nuts with washers (for spacing) to hold the disc securely against the hub. Adjust the rear parking brake shoes. Install the caliper bracket and Brake Caliper. Be sure to tighten the bolts to the specified torque values. Install the wheel and lug nuts. Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque. Check the parking brake for proper operation. If they are not fully operational, perform a break-in procedure. Break-in the new shoes by performing the following procedure: Set and release the parking brake a few times. Set the parking brake. Drive the vehicle to 20 miles per hour. Stop the vehicle and RELEASE THE PARKING BRAKE. Allow the parking brake shoes and disc/drum to cool for 5 minutes, then drive the vehicle normally for another two minutes. Repeat these break-in steps again if necessary, but no more than three cycles. Do not shorten the cooling period between driving cycles. Check the parking brake adjustment and adjust it again if necessary.
