How to remove and install the starter motor on the Nissan Altima?

Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Remove the fresh air intake duct. On 2010 and earlier models with an automatic transaxle, remove the air filter housing. On all automatic transaxle-equipped vehicles, remove the battery and the battery tray. Disconnect the wiring from the starter (Starter motor B+ terminal, S terminal and lower mounting bolt (four-cylinder engine)). Note: The wiring and mounting bolts are accessible from above on some models, but on other models they are more easily accessed from below. Remove the two mounting bolts and remove the starter (Starter motor upper mounting bolt (four-cylinder engine)). Installation is the reverse of removal. Reconnect the battery and perform the necessary re-learn procedures.

Nissan Altima Starter Motor

The Starter Motor of a Nissan Altima transforms the energy from the battery into rotational force. When a heavy current from an external solenoid connected to the battery passes through the Starter Motor, its armature and the surrounding field coils or magnets become energized. The Starter Motor's armature spins, which engages the motor drive gear with the flywheel or flexplate ring gear to spin the crankshaft until the engine can run on its own. The drive is disengaged by an overrunning clutch, thus protecting the Starter Motor. The operation of some Altima models remains the same as other models, but the armature turns a reduction gear to allow for added torque. The starter relay and neutral or clutch switches among safety devices in the ignition circuit stop the Nissan Altima engine from cranking when the Nissan vehicle is in gear.
