When the time comes to overhaul CV joints, start by thinking of other alternatives before you can proceed, as complete rebuilt driveaxles are available on an exchange basis and this will facilitate the process. This is because some auto parts stores sell boots, which can be installed without taking out the driveaxle from the vehicle; nevertheless, removing the driveaxle and disassembling of the CV joint is better since one ensures that any contaminants like moisture or dirt that could cause wear are absent. First remove driveaxle from vehicle and clamp it in a vise cushioning vise jaws with wood or rags to protect driveaxle. To begin with for inner cv joint open boot clamps by prying loose their locking tabs then remove them and discard them. Slide boot back onto axleshaft; next take wire ring ball retainer out of outer race to remove outer race from inner bearing assembly. Wipe off excess grease from the inner bearing then remove snap-ring at axleshaft end and slide off inner bearing assembly tapping it off if necessary with hammer and brass punch against inner race. First mark inner race/cage for correct reassembly orientation - shows how to do this. One can pop balls out with a screwdriver or piece of wood without damaging the inner race, balls or cage. Rotate inner race 90 degrees so that it aligns cage windows with its lands then rotate it out of cage. The inspection involves cleaning components in solvent to remove all grease residues and checking cage/races for wear, damage, pitting, score marks or cracks where shiny polished spots are normal/harmless. Insert inner race into cage making sure matchmarks align then press balls into cage windows during reassembly. Next use tape to protect axleshaft splines while sliding small boot clamp and boot onto axleshaft, removing tape afterwards. Once this is done position inner race/cage assembly on axleshaft with larger diameter side of cage facing axleshaft end. Proceed to install a snap-ring and then fill boot with CV joint grease before packing grease manually into inner race/cage assembly. Slide outer race onto inner race; install wire ring retainer. After wiping away excess grease from axle boot groove on outer race, seat small boot diameter in recessed area on axleshaft and fasten this clamp. Adjust CV joint to the correct length equalize boot pressure with a screwdriver, and do not damage boot when installing the clamps. Put back driveaxle assembly. For outer cv joint remove boot clamps then followed by driveaxle itself.
