Have the air conditioning system discharged at a dealer service department or service station. Drain the cooling system. If the coolant is relatively new or in good condition, save it and reuse it. Move the front seats to the rearmost position. Turn the ignition key to the ON position, then set the heater control to HOT. Remove the ignition key. Drain the cooling system. If the coolant is relatively new, or in good condition, save it and re-use it. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Working in the engine compartment, move the water valve for clearance, then disconnect the heater hoses at the firewall. Disconnect the air conditioning refrigerant lines from the expansion valve at the firewall. Always wear eye protection when disconnecting air conditioning system fittings. Remove the steering column. Remove the instrument panel and floor console, as equipped. Disconnect the instrument panel wiring harness at each end of the cowl support bar and from the fuse box. Remove the floor healing ducts. Remove the cowl support bar mounting bolts and carefully pull the bar away from the firewall with the heating/air conditioning unit attached. Remove the heater core pipe bracket from the top of the unit, then remove the screws and the heater core cover. Slide the heater core and its pipes upward out of the heating/air conditioning unit. Reassemble the heating/air conditioning unit and check the operation of the control flaps. If any parts bind, correct the problem before installation. Reinstall the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal. When attaching the steering column to the support bracket, tighten the fasteners to the torque. Remove the lower right-rear interior trim panel in the luggage compartment. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core. Remove the small bracket over the heater core, then pull heater core directly out of the housing. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Refill the cooling system, reconnect the battery and run the engine. Check for leaks and proper operation of the system. Have the air conditioning system evacuated, recharged and leak tested by the shop that discharged it.
