The rotational output you get from your steering gear is converted into linear push/pull which turns the wheels with Nissan Frontier Pitman Arm. At one end, the component is attached to the sector shaft of a steering box, whereas the other end can be connected to either the drag link or the center link. The component transmits angular input from the steering wheel into a lateral movement which repositions the linkage and changes the wheel direction. A supported fit on the sector shaft helps maintain steering geometry while height is maintained by the idler arm on the opposite side of the linkage. The Pitman Arm has a ball joint that allows controlled movement. If this joint wears, play can develop in the steering. - Q: How to remove and install Idler Arm and Pitman Arm on Nissan Frontier?A:To remove the tie-rod end from the Steering Knuckle, first remove the cotter pin and then unscrew the inner tie-rod-to-relay rod nut. Use a puller or picklefork-type balljoint separator to free the ballstud from the relay rod. Take off the nut and detach the tie-rod from the relay rod. When installing tighten nut to torque specification and use new cotter pin. Raise car up and secure it with jackstand. Remove at inner ends of tie-rods from relay rod. Detach relay rod from Pitman arm and also idler arm. Installation is done in reverse order of removal process. Loosen right front wheel lug nuts and raise vehicle. Loosen but do not remove idler arm-to-relay rod nut. Use a two jaw puller or picklefork-type balljoint separator to separate idler arm from relay rod, remove nut and idler arm-to-frame nuts and bolts, position idler arm on frame, install bolts and nuts, connect relay rod to idler arm ballstud and install nut.RAISE CAR UP AND SECURE IT WITH JACKSTANDS.Remove cotter pin; loosen nut; detach relay rod from Pitman arm; remove Pitman arm nut and washer; use either pitman Arm Puller or Two Jaw Puller to take off Pitman Arm.INSTALLATION is the REVERSE OF REMOVAL.Ensure that marks on pitman arm already correspond with those on steering gear shaft.Tighten the nut to torque specification using a brand new cotter pin.
