Nissan Maxima Starter Motor
The Nissan Maxima Starter Motor is responsible for providing the rapid rotation that wakes the engine as soon as the key is turned or the start button is pressed. It draws power from the battery and generates spinning energy to crank the crankshaft. Heavy battery cables are fed inside the small case to an external solenoid that, when the ignition switch signals through a relay and neutral or clutch safety switch, pushes the drive pinion into the flywheel and then energizes the Starter Motor windings. A rotating armature surrounded by field coils or permanent magnets transmits torque through an overrunning clutch, causing the gear to disengage once the engine fires. Earlier models relied on a larger direct-drive Starter Motor. The later versions switched to a lighter gear-reduction Starter Motor. It uses a high-speed armature and reduction gears supplying equal torque for less current usage. It aids in cold starts and saves weight. - Q: How to disconnect and remove the starter motor from a Nissan Maxima?A:Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. On 2003 and earlier models, remove the air intake duct and the air cleaner housing assembly from the engine compartment. On 2004 and later 4-speed automatic transaxle models, remove the cover from the air cleaner housing and disconnect the duct that connects the air cleaner to the intake manifold collector. On 2004 and later manual transaxle models, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. On CVT models, remove the starter electrical harness bracket. Disconnect the Battery Cable and the solenoid terminal connection from the starter solenoid. Remove the starter motor mounting bolts and detach the starter from the engine. Installation is the reverse of removal.
