    Q:
How to diagnose a malfunction Starter Motor and starting circuit on Nissan Maxima? Posted by Customer
    A:
In case the starting circuit is malfunctioning it's important that we should not immediately conclude that starter is the main cause of the problem. This should start by checking a variety of vital components: Ensure that cable clamps on battery are well connected to it and clean, Inspect battery cables for their state and replace any damaged ones, Test battery condition and if it fails any tests, a new battery should be installed in its place, Look into wiring and connections around the starter solenoid, Ascertain that bolts used to mount the starter are tightened correctly. In case turning the ignition switch to start position doesn't engage the starter, check for presence of battery voltage at positive battery cable terminal of solenoid as long as it has been established that both battery and cables are in perfect health. Probe the S terminal on the starter solenoid with your multimeter as you turn the ignition switch to start just to ensure that solenoid is getting right voltage signal from ignition switch; otherwise check engine compartment fuse box for fusible links, passenger compartment fuse panel for related fuses, and then look at circuitry involved with starter inhibitor or interlock relay. For more information regarding relay locations, wiring diagrams and relay checking procedure. If park/neutral position switch or clutch interlock switch prevents operation of starter relay circuit while vehicle is not in PARK or NEUTRAL or clutch pedal isn't fully depressed during engine cranking attempt. Furthermore inspect anti-theft alarm circuitry including control module for any short circuits as well as damaged components. If there is voltage at the starter solenoid but no movement of motor starts happening then take out the starter and connect it with a 12-volt automotive battery in order to perform a bench test also monitoring behavior of solenoid along with that one of motor's armature shaft . In case the plunger of the solenoid extends and no rotation of motor happens, then starter is defective but solenoid works. In case no motion is there but the solenoid clicks, it could be possible that both the solenoid or starter motor are faulty. However, when plunger of the solenoid extends and pinion drive rotates at approximately 3,000 rpm, this is an indication that starter/solenoid assembly functions properly.
