To remove the starter motor on 1.2 litre petrol engines starter motor, first, pull the battery negative terminal, then, remove the cooling system expansion tank bolts and shift the tank out of the way. Stack the wiring loom and hoses out of the way to reveal that the starter motor is mounted on the front of the cylinder block, to the bell housing of the transmission. Draw the rubber hood back, loosen or unscrew the two nuts holding the starter with your hand, and then, unclasp the major battery connection as well as the small solenoid wiring from the starter solenoid. Loosen the starter motor mounting bolts while propping up the motor, then swing it out of the way. For 1.6 litre petrol engines, perform mostly the same initial repairs, such as disconnecting the battery negative terminal and the moving of the cooling system expansion tank.
