Nissan Pathfinder Starter Motor provides the burst of torque that spins the crankshaft and fires up the engine with just a turn of the key. In each model, the Starter Motor uses a heavy-gauge cable to pull battery power to a solenoid that both pushes the drive gear against the flywheel and energizes the motor windings so the armature whirls. Magnetic force is generated by brushes, a commutator, and field coils or permanent magnets. After the combustion takes place, the overrunning clutch is actuated to disengage the gear. The early Pathfinder versions applied a simple direct drive electric Starter Motor, whereas the succeeding generations featured a lighter weight gear-reduction Starter Motor that transmits torque through a set of reduction gears for more powerful cranking from a smaller unit. Even though pneumatic or hydraulic starters exist elsewhere, the Nissan Pathfinder line utilizes an electric starter powered by an ignition switch, relay, and a pair of neutral or clutch safety switches to avoid unwanted movement. The continuous improvements made by the manufacturer maintain the reliability of the system.
