The Nissan Pathfinder Alternator utilizes the engine's mechanical energy to generate electricity that will charge the battery and power onboard circuits. The Nissan Alternator is mounted in a two-piece cast aluminum housing that contains a stationary stator, a rotor mounted on a shaft, and bearings at the drive and rear ends. The rotor shaft is fitted with a pulley and cooling fan, and the belt from the crankshaft turns the Alternator to produce a magnetic field that generates alternating current in the windings of the stator. The rectifier assembly inside the rear housing consists of diodes and heat sinks which convert the output to direct current, while brushes feed field current. The voltage regulator takes up residence in the Alternator housing. The regulator, which may be integral to the unit or coordinated through the powertrain control module, varies the field current so that the Nissan electrical system will not undercharge or overcharge.
