Nissan 300ZX Starter Motor
A Nissan 300ZX Starter Motor supplies the burst of spin to wake the V6 by turning the electricity from your battery into motion. Starter Motor is housed in a small shell that looks compact. Battery wiring is connected to the solenoid. The wires, usually called conductors, send current into field coils or permanent magnets that enclose a rotatable armature. When the driver twists the key, the control circuit closes. The solenoid slides the drive pinion into the flywheel while the Starter Motor gets energized and the electromagnetic force whirls the armature to crank the crankshaft. Once the engine has started, an overrunning clutch allows the pinion to freewheel to protect the Starter Motor from back spin. The early Z31 300ZXs had a direct drive unit. Later models had a lighter and more compact gear reduction design. A planetary gear set is installed between the armature and pinion so the smaller, faster 300ZX Starter Motor can deliver greater torque using less current. Both units are situated beside the V6 block, and Nissan incorporated neutral or clutch safety switches to prevent unintentional engagement, a safeguard that every 300ZX owner still benefits from. Generally, the only thing the Nissan system requires for a crisp start is battery health and clean cables.

- Q: How to remove and install a starter motor/solenoid assembly on the Nissan 300ZX?A:Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery and place the cable out of the way so it cannot accidentally come in contact with the negative terminal of the battery, as this would once again allow power into the electrical system of the vehicle. Lift the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Unplug the ignition switch wire connecter to the solenoid and remove the battery cable by removing the retaining nut. Remove the two starter retaining bolts. Disengage the starter/solenoid assembly from the flywheel/ driveplate and remove the assembly from the vehicle. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
