What precautions should be taken when servicing an oxygen sensor on Nissan Murano?

Unscrew the sensor with an oxygen sensor socket if one is available. You may have to raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands to reach it. If you're going to install the old sensor, apply anti-seize compound to the threads to ease future removal. If you're installing a new sensor, the threads will already have anti-seize on them. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the sensor securely. For downstream oxygen sensors, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. The downstream oxygen sensors are accessible only from underneath. Disconnect the wiring harness from the pigtail of the sensor. Unscrew the sensor, using an oxygen sensor socket if one is available. If you're going to install the old sensor, apply anti-seize compound to the threads to ease future removal. If you're installing a new sensor, the threads will already have anti-seize on them. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the sensor securely.

Nissan Murano Oxygen Sensor

The Nissan Murano Oxygen Sensor is an exhaust component that monitors the amount of oxygen in the exhaust stream so that the engine computer will keep the air fuel mixture in a beneficial range and prevent unwanted emissions. Situated in the exhaust stream of the Murano, the Oxygen Sensor contains a zirconium dioxide element that is platinum-coated on its electrodes, at least according to the manufacturer. The element is secured in a ceramic core with a threaded steel shell. Openings expose the tip to exhaust gas. Separate passages admit outside air, which is applied for reference. When the element is heated to about 600°F, a voltage is produced that swings between roughly 0.1 and 0.9 volt. This indicates a lean or rich condition and helps make adjustments to the injector while in closed loop operation. Modern vehicles carry at least two sensors, one placed before and one placed after the catalytic converter. The upstream sensor controls the mixture, while the downstream one monitors the efficiency of the catalyst.
