Nissan Pathfinder Steering Knuckle
The Steering Knuckle connects the suspension and steering components with the front wheel assembly in a Nissan Pathfinder. The part provides attachments for upper and lower control arms or struts, tie-rod ends, and the spindle or hub that carries the wheel, allowing vertical travel of the wheel over bumps and pivoting sideways while steering. On each front corner of the Nissan, a Steering Knuckle is interposed between the wheel hub and suspension linkage. The casting of the Steering Knuckle varies depending on drivetrain layout. Rear-wheel drive versions may be fitted with either an integral spindle or a bolted hub. Conversely, front wheel or all-wheel drive Pathfinder models route the drive axle through the knuckle to a hub either fixed to or pressed into it. On the Pathfinder, each Steering Knuckle supports the wheel hub or spindle so that the tire rotates in a plane and stays in sync with suspension movement. The linkage connecting steering control with load surfaces; however, damage to stud bores or bearing contact areas can necessitate parts replacement to maintain the safety of a Nissan chassis. - Q: How to remove and install a steering knuckle on Nissan Pathfinder?A:The first step requires loosening wheel lug nuts followed by vehicle lifting before securing it with jackstands placed under frame or subframe rails before wheel removal. For 4WD models, remove the driveaxle. A floor jack should raise the lower Control Arm while you support it. A piece of wire should suspend the caliper from the brake disc along with its hose as you disconnect the brake caliper from the brake disc assembly. Extract the disc splash shield attached to the steering knuckle. Pathfinder owners must remove the balljoint from the control arm as a part of installation. Remove the tie-rod end connection from the steering knuckle section. Pathfinder models need their steering knuckle bolted and nutted removal from the strut before steering knuckle extraction. To install the components back in place reverse the order of disassembly while applying torque to balljoint and strut fasteners of Pathfinder models and tie-rod end fasteners to corresponding specifications. Extra tightening of the nut provides alignment of the slots in the nut with the ballstud hole. Then insert a new cotter pin after alignment. Secure all mounting bolts of the caliper and wheel lug nuts and locking hub bolts at their appropriate torque settings.
